Houthis increase attacks on Saudi-backed forces as Cruz advocates arming Iranian protesters

Yemen’s state-run Saba news agency reported that Houthi rebels have launched new missile and drone strikes on the eastern city of Marib, following a previous assault that resulted in significant casualties among Yemeni government forces. Yemeni armed forces managed to intercept several Houthi drones over Marib, as smoke was visible rising from the area in videos shared on social media. The Houthis did not provide any comment on this recent attack. The escalation followed a declaration by Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree of a “large-scale and special military operation” targeting Saudi military positions, claiming considerable losses for Yemeni soldiers. The Saudi-backed Yemeni Joint Operations Command confirmed 17 military fatalities, while other reports indicated at least 58 casualties among government troops. Additionally, the Saudi-led coalition reported that Houthi attacks in southern Saudi Arabia injured 11 civilians, including women and children, and condemned the use of indiscriminate weaponry against civilians.

Why It Matters

The ongoing conflict in Yemen, which has been marked by a civil war since 2014, has led to one of the world’s most severe humanitarian crises. The Houthis, who are backed by Iran, are fighting against a coalition led by Saudi Arabia that supports the Yemeni government. The recent escalation highlights the persistent volatility in the region, with both sides committing acts that violate international humanitarian laws. The situation in Yemen continues to draw international attention due to the humanitarian impact, including widespread famine and displacement, exacerbated by continued military operations and blockades.
