Shipping expert reports no traffic in the Strait of Hormuz despite U.S. claims

The U.S. military’s Central Command reaffirmed on Tuesday that the Strait of Hormuz remains open for commercial traffic, despite ongoing Iranian aggression that has seen over 30 attacks on vessels since the outbreak of conflict. President Trump echoed this sentiment but warned Iran of severe repercussions, including the potential destruction of key infrastructure for further attacks on shipping. However, commercial shipping has significantly declined, reaching a three-week low, as vessels avoid the strait amid security concerns. Only three commercial ships were reported transiting the strait on Tuesday, while two ships were struck off Oman earlier in the week, prompting evacuations. The situation has led to heightened reluctance among ship crews to navigate the area, despite offers of increased pay from some maritime companies for those willing to take the risk.

Why It Matters

The Strait of Hormuz is a critical maritime chokepoint, with approximately 30% of global oil supplies passing through it annually. The region has historically been a flashpoint for geopolitical tensions, particularly between the U.S. and Iran. The recent escalation of Iranian threats also extends to the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, another vital shipping route, which could further disrupt global trade and energy supplies. The U.S. military has struggled to ensure safe passage for commercial vessels, raising concerns over the security of international shipping routes amid rising tensions in the region.
