Iran to Enforce Stricter Penalties for Contact with Foreign Media

Iran’s parliament recently passed a resolution to impose harsher penalties on citizens who engage with foreign media, organizations, or individuals. If ratified by higher authorities, the legislation could lead to prison sentences of up to two years for Iranians contacting U.S. media or foreign embassies without prior written permission from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Current laws already restrict information sharing with foreign-backed media, and the new measures would extend to prohibiting educational and research activities with foreign entities, carrying potential 10-year sentences for violations deemed “incompatible with Iranian culture.” The Iranian government, particularly under the leadership of Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, has expressed heightened fears of foreign influence, especially following conflicts involving Israel and the U.S. in recent years. This legislation reflects the regime’s ongoing crackdown on dissent and communication with the outside world.

Why It Matters

The passage of this legislation highlights Iran’s ongoing efforts to control information and limit external influences, particularly in the context of rising tensions with the U.S. and Israel. Since the 1979 revolution, the Iranian government has been wary of foreign infiltration, leading to increasingly authoritarian measures. Recent historical events, including military conflicts and crackdowns on dissent, demonstrate the regime’s escalating paranoia about perceived threats from foreign powers, which in turn fuels domestic repression. This new law is part of a broader trend of tightening control over civil liberties and communication in Iran, affecting both ordinary citizens and professionals in various fields.
