Iran signals possible change in its nuclear doctrine

Iran has the capacity to produce nuclear weapons and is prepared to change its policies on using them if faced with an existential threat, according to an adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The U.S. remains concerned with Iran’s nuclear activities, although there is no evidence that Iran has decided to build a nuclear weapon. The Pentagon is deploying military assets to the Middle East in response to recent airstrikes against Iran. Israel has vowed to prevent Iran from achieving a nuclear weapon and has engaged in retaliatory strikes against Iranian military targets. Iranian officials have threatened to respond aggressively to Israel’s actions, raising tensions in the region. Iran may increase the range of its ballistic missiles in response to Western disregard for its concerns.
