‘Torturous’ indefinite jail term robbed son of whole adult life before he died in a cell at 34, mother says

Josh Mcrae, a 34-year-old prisoner, was found dead in his cell at HMP Long Lartin after being refused parole and serving 16 years of an indefinite jail term under the abolished imprisonment for public protection (IPP) sentence. His mother, Theresa Mcrae, called for an end to the injustice of the cruel and inhumane sentence. Despite the controversial nature of the IPP sentences, which were scrapped in 2012 but left thousands detained with no release date, Josh’s death has brought attention to the need for reform in the criminal justice system.
