Nate Howard, an Iowa Army National Guard member and son of Meskwaki Nation Police Chief Jeffrey Bunn, was killed in a terrorist attack in Syria on December 13, 2025. The ambush, carried out by an ISIS gunman, also claimed the life of another soldier and a civilian interpreter, injuring three more. Howard, who served for over 11 years and was inspired by his grandfather’s military service, worked at Fisher Controls when off duty. Local officials expressed deep condolences, emphasizing the personal impact of the loss on families and communities.
