From January to December last year, the Trump administration’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained 265 young immigrants with Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS) and deported 132, according to the Department of Homeland Security. SIJS was established to protect minors from abuse or neglect, allowing them to seek legal residency in the U.S. However, after the termination of a deferred action policy that shielded these youths from deportation, many faced removal despite their vulnerable status. Legal actions are ongoing to address these deportations and challenge the policy changes.
