What we know about the illnesses that have sickened over 400 people and killed more than 50 in Congo

Unidentified illnesses in northwestern Congo have killed over 50 people in the past five weeks, with outbreaks in two distant villages in Equateur province. Health officials are investigating the cause and spread of the diseases, which have resulted in 419 cases and 53 deaths. While initial fears of Ebola have been ruled out, possible causes being investigated include malaria, viral hemorrhagic fever, and food or water poisoning.
