Illinois ranked No. 1 in men’s college basketball preseason rankings after player retention

The Illinois Fighting Illini have advanced to the Final Four of the 2026 men’s NCAA tournament for the first time since 2005, ultimately losing to the UConn Huskies. Despite the loss of standout player Keaton Wagler, who is entering the 2026 NBA Draft, the Illini have retained a significant portion of their roster, including key players Andrej Stojakovic, David Mirkovic, Tomislav Ivisic, Zvonimir Ivisic, and Jake Davis. The team has also acquired Providence guard Stefan Vaaks, a 6’7 shooter, to fill the gap left by Wagler. Illinois excelled in three-point shooting and offensive rebounding last season, ranking among the top teams in NCAA Division I. With the retention of nearly all their core players, the Illini are positioned to be a leading contender in the upcoming season.

Why It Matters

Illinois’ strong roster retention is notable in an era where the average college basketball team experiences a 31% player turnover due to the transfer portal. The Illini are bringing back five players who accounted for a significant portion of their minutes last season, which could provide them with a competitive edge. Historically, successful teams that maintain their core players often see improved performance in subsequent seasons. The Illini’s ability to return a majority of their talent while adding new recruits could establish them as a dominant force in college basketball, particularly as they prepare for the 2026-27 season.
