Survivors trapped in an abandoned gold mine in South Africa turned to cannibalism to survive during a nine-month standoff with police. Rescuers found 78 bodies and 246 survivors, some of whom spoke about resorting to eating limbs and cockroaches. The survivors were blocked from accessing food and water by authorities. The horrific conditions underground led to dehydration and starvation, with some miners too weak to move. The government has faced criticism for negligence, with calls for an investigation into the incident.
