Ilia Malinin wins third consecutive world figure skating championship title

Ilia Malinin reclaimed his title at the ISU World Figure Skating Championships, securing his third consecutive world championship win. Following a disappointing eighth-place finish at the Olympics in Milan, Malinin performed exceptionally, landing five quadruple jumps and a backflip, scoring 218.11 in the free skate and a total of 329.40. Japan’s Yuma Kagiyama took the silver medal with a score of 306.67, while Shun Sato also from Japan finished third with 288.54. Malinin expressed gratitude for the crowd’s support and emphasized the importance of overcoming challenges, stating that he aimed to navigate the free skate “in one piece.” This victory marks Malinin as the first male skater to achieve three consecutive world titles since Nathan Chen in 2021.

Why It Matters

Malinin’s victory highlights his resilience and ability to bounce back from setbacks, reinforcing his status as a leading figure in competitive figure skating. The achievement of three consecutive world titles places him in a select group of elite skaters, showcasing the rarity of such consistency in the sport. His performance also underscores the increasing competitiveness of men’s figure skating, as evidenced by the strong showing from other international contenders like Kagiyama and Sato. Malinin’s focus on innovation, particularly his pursuit of complex jumps, reflects a broader trend in figure skating where athletes continuously push the limits of their technical skills.
