The Independent Investigations Office of B.C. (IIO) is evaluating whether to investigate police actions related to the Tumbler Ridge mass shooting, where eight people were killed by 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar on February 10. IIO Chief Civilian Director Jessica Berglund stated that investigators are assessing evidence to determine if their mandate is met before proceeding. The IIO is examining potential connections between police actions and the tragic events, which included prior mental health-related calls at Van Rootselaar’s home. If no connection is found, the investigation will not continue; otherwise, all evidence will be reviewed.
