Iran vessel seized by Marines from USS Tripoli, CENTCOM reports

President Donald Trump announced on social media that the U.S. Navy had attacked an Iranian-flagged cargo ship, the Touska, in the Gulf of Oman, and that U.S. Marines have taken custody of the vessel. The ship, nearly 900 feet long, attempted to breach a U.S. naval blockade and was intercepted by the destroyer USS Spruance while transiting the North Arabian Sea toward Iran’s Bandar Abbas port. After issuing multiple warnings over six hours, the USS Spruance fired at the ship’s engine room before Marines boarded the vessel, which remains under U.S. control. This incident marks the first time the U.S. has attacked and seized a merchant vessel since implementing the blockade on Iranian ports. Trump stated that the Touska is under U.S. Treasury sanctions due to previous illegal activities.

Why It Matters

This incident highlights escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran, particularly in maritime operations. The U.S. has been enforcing a blockade on Iranian-flagged vessels, with military leaders indicating a commitment to intercept any ships providing material support to Iran, especially those involved in oil transport. The U.S. Central Command’s recent actions reflect ongoing geopolitical challenges in the region, particularly following sanctions aimed at limiting Iran’s influence and activities linked to its military and nuclear programs. The seizure of the Touska could further strain relations and impact global shipping routes.
