Internal Department of Homeland Security data reveals that less than 14% of nearly 400,000 immigrants arrested by ICE during President Trump’s first year back in office had violent criminal charges or convictions, contradicting claims that the deportation efforts primarily target dangerous criminals. About 40% of those arrested had no criminal record, and only 1.9% were accused of gang affiliations. Despite a dramatic increase in arrests, the proportion of those with criminal histories dropped significantly from the previous administration. Public support for Trump’s deportation policies has also waned, with concerns over the tactics used by ICE agents.
