The family involved in a tragic triple-homicide in Hastings had no prior contact with New Zealand’s children’s ministry, Oranga Tamariki. The incident, which has prompted a homicide investigation named Operation Train, occurred early on Sunday morning when emergency services responded to a report at a property on Avenue Rd East. Upon arrival, police discovered a mother and two daughters, a three-month-old and a 17-month-old, all with stab wounds. One of the children was found deceased at the scene, while the other two were transported to the hospital in critical condition but later succumbed to their injuries.

Why It Matters

This incident highlights the ongoing concerns regarding domestic violence and child safety in New Zealand. The lack of previous involvement with Oranga Tamariki raises questions about the effectiveness of the current systems in place to protect vulnerable families. Historical data shows that New Zealand has faced increasing rates of family violence, with significant attention drawn to the need for improved intervention strategies. The tragic loss of life in this case underscores the urgent need for comprehensive support and preventive measures for families at risk.
