‘I was threatened with electroshock as a child for wearing a dress – now I’m proudly trans’

Samantha Wolsey, 69, formerly known as Billy, has come out as a transgender woman in her 60s after facing severe challenges, including being threatened with electroshock therapy as a child for wearing a dress. Despite enduring violence and hiding her identity for years, she received support from her wife, Denise, who encouraged her to embrace her true self. After moving to Belong Wigan’s independent living flats, staff helped Samantha accept her identity, leading her to finally express herself openly and advocate for authenticity in others.
