In the Askar refugee camp in the occupied West Bank, families and young people used to gather beneath the olive trees on the slopes of Tel Askar. However, due to the frequent shootings by Israeli soldiers, many no longer feel safe to do so. The camp’s director, Amjad Refaee, highlights the haunting memories of those killed by soldiers in one of the only green spaces where children can play. The soldiers have been shooting to kill or cause disability, leading to multiple casualties, including teenagers and children. The camp has become an entry point for invading soldiers from the nearby illegal settlement, resulting in numerous injuries and deaths. At least 13 Palestinians have been killed in Askar since Israel’s intensified assaults in the West Bank after October 7. The camp, home to 24,000 people, faces high unemployment rates and cramped living conditions.

Why It Matters:
The ongoing violence and shootings by Israeli soldiers in the Askar refugee camp highlight the dangerous and oppressive conditions faced by Palestinian residents in the occupied West Bank. The high number of casualties, including children, underscores the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the protection of civilian lives in the region. The situation also sheds light on the ongoing challenges faced by Palestinian refugees living in overcrowded and impoverished conditions in the camps, further emphasizing the need for humanitarian assistance and a just and lasting solution to the refugee crisis.
