Different generations have vastly different perspectives on life. Work, the internet, technology, media, and fashion are all viewed differently by each generation. When it comes to emoji use, Gen Z, millennials, Gen X, and boomers all have varying approaches.

A recent poll highlighted certain emojis that Gen Z would never use, prompting a deeper look into how different generations utilize emojis. To gain insight, individuals from three different generations were interviewed:

– Jo and Michael, members of Gen Z.
– Emily and Sam, millennials.
– Ant and Mike, individuals in their 50s.

Before discussing specific emojis, each participant shared their thoughts on generational emoji use. Jo mentioned that Gen Z uses emojis ironically, while older generations tend to use them more literally. Sam noted that younger generations use emojis as punctuation, while older generations use them more seriously.

Next, participants were asked about the meanings and uses of specific emojis. Here are some of their responses:

– The “skull” emoji: Used to convey a sense of “I’m dead” or to express something as stupid.
– The “loudly crying face” emoji: Often used to convey laughter at something that isn’t meant to be funny.
– The “weary face” emoji: Used to express sadness or disappointment.
– The “hot face” emoji: Used to sarcastically compliment someone’s appearance or to express feeling overheated.
– The “smiling face with hearts” emoji: Used to express love or appreciation.
– The “folded hands” emoji: Considered versatile, often used to express gratitude or pleading.
– The “face with raised eyebrow” emoji: Used to express skepticism or suspicion.
– The “exploding head” emoji: Used to convey being overwhelmed or shocked.
– The “nail polish” emoji: Commonly used to describe something fancy or to refer to queer individuals.
– The “smirking face” emoji: Used to imply intentions or hint at something.
– The “face with rolling eyes” emoji: Typically used to express annoyance or disbelief.
– The “melting face” emoji: Used to convey a feeling of not wanting to do something.
