Hurricane Melissa, a major Category 3 storm, is expected to strengthen further before making landfall in Jamaica, threatening disastrous flooding and landslides.
Hurricane Melissa, currently 200 km from Jamaica, has maximum winds of 185 km/h, prompting airport closures and the activation of over 650 shelters. The storm has already caused casualties in Haiti and the Dominican Republic and is projected to bring severe weather impacts to Cuba and the Bahamas in the coming days.
