What You Need to Know
• The United Nations State of Food Security and Nutrition report indicates 645 million people faced hunger in 2025.
• Hunger prevalence globally decreased to 7.8 percent in 2025, down from 8.1 percent in 2024.
• Africa has the highest hunger rates, with 309 million undernourished individuals, nearly half of the world’s hungry population.

The United Nations State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report reveals that 645 million people experienced hunger in 2025, a decrease of 14 million from 2024 and 43 million from 2022. The global prevalence of hunger fell to 7.8 percent in 2025, marking the third consecutive year of improvement after a surge during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, hunger levels remain above pre-pandemic figures from 2019. Africa continues to be the most affected region, with 309 million undernourished individuals, representing one in five people on the continent. The report projects that by 2030, the number of undernourished people could decline by approximately 20 percent, although 510 to 520 million people are still expected to face hunger by the decade’s end.

Why It Matters

The ongoing issue of global hunger is critical as it affects millions, particularly in regions like Africa, where conflict and climate change exacerbate food insecurity. The report highlights the need for sustained efforts to combat hunger, especially given that 56 percent of those projected to be hungry by 2030 will reside in Africa. Historical trends show that while there has been progress in reducing hunger in Asia and Latin America, Africa’s situation remains dire, with population growth contributing to rising numbers of undernourished individuals. Addressing these challenges is essential for achieving global food security and improving nutrition worldwide.
