A humanoid robot developed by the Chinese smartphone manufacturer Honor won a half-marathon in Beijing, completing the 21-kilometer (13-mile) race in 50 minutes and 26 seconds. This performance surpassed the human world record set by Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo, who finished the same distance in approximately 57 minutes. The event marked a significant improvement from last year’s inaugural race, where the winning robot took over two hours to finish. Approximately 40% of the participating robots navigated the course autonomously, while others were controlled remotely. A separate remotely-controlled robot finished first in 48 minutes and 19 seconds, but the autonomous robot received the championship due to weighted scoring rules.

Why It Matters

The advancement of humanoid robots in competitive settings signifies a notable development in China’s technological capabilities, particularly in the context of the country’s five-year plan aimed at enhancing scientific and technological frontiers. China’s push to develop products like humanoid robots ties into its broader goals of becoming a leader in technology, as evidenced by recent rankings of Chinese companies in the global robotics market. Companies such as AGIBOT, Unitree Robotics, and UBTech Robotics have emerged as significant players, each shipping over 1,000 units last year, demonstrating the rapid growth and competitive nature of the robotics industry in China.
