The Inter-American Court of Human Rights has ordered Peru to pay $340,000 in reparations to the family of Celia Ramos, a mother of three who died from a forced sterilisation during the 1990s under President Fujimori’s regime. This ruling marks the first time the court has addressed Peru’s campaign of sterilisation, which targeted poor and Indigenous women. As many as 314,000 women and 24,000 men were sterilised without consent, leading to long-term complications and even death. Fujimori’s daughter, Keiko, who is running for the presidency, has denied her father’s involvement in human rights abuses.
