Canadian submarine sinks U.S. warship in Hawaii with torpedo

The Royal Canadian Navy’s HMCS Corner Brook, Canada’s only operational submarine, successfully sank the decommissioned U.S. guided-missile cruiser USS Mobile Bay during the Rim of the Pacific 2026 exercise on July 12, 2026. This event aimed to showcase the capabilities of submarines to attract new recruits amid a shortage of qualified personnel. Currently, Canada has only 193 qualified submariners, far fewer than the 28 needed to operate each of the new submarines being negotiated from Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems. The sinking, part of a larger military exercise involving 30 nations and over 30,000 personnel, involved Corner Brook launching a Mark 48 torpedo from about a mile away, marking a significant operational milestone for its crew. The Royal Canadian Navy aims to enhance its submarine capabilities as it plans to introduce up to 12 new submarines by 2034.

Why It Matters

The sinking of USS Mobile Bay highlights the strategic emphasis on modernizing the Canadian submarine fleet, which currently relies on aging Victoria-class submarines acquired in the late 1990s. With plans to expand the fleet, the Canadian Navy faces a critical workforce challenge, as the number of qualified submariners is insufficient to fully operate the forthcoming vessels. The Rim of the Pacific exercise, which involved extensive international cooperation and participation, serves to enhance maritime security and interoperability among allied forces. Strengthening submarine capabilities is essential for Canada to maintain an effective naval presence and address evolving maritime security threats in the Pacific region.
