In recent interviews with Ars Technica, OpenAI employees disclosed that the company heavily relies on its AI coding agent, Codex, to enhance the development tool itself. Launched as a research preview in May 2025, Codex functions as a cloud-based software engineering agent capable of writing features, fixing bugs, and proposing pull requests. It is accessible through ChatGPT, a command-line interface, and IDE extensions. The name “Codex,” which dates back to a 2021 model that powered GitHub Copilot, is rumored to signify “code execution.”
