What You Need to Know
• Petrol prices have increased in at least 145 countries since the U.S. and Israel began military actions against Iran.
• Myanmar experienced the highest petrol price rise, with a 56 percent increase from $0.77 to $1.20 per litre.

Since the United States and Israel initiated military actions against Iran on February 28, petrol prices have surged in at least 145 countries, impacting consumers globally. Data from GlobalPetrolPrices indicates that Myanmar saw the most significant increase, with petrol prices rising by 56 percent from $0.77 per litre on February 23 to $1.20 on August 17. Bhutan followed closely with a 55 percent increase, while Cuba, the United Arab Emirates, and Nigeria also reported substantial rises of 51 percent, 50 percent, and 48 percent, respectively. In contrast, 25 countries, primarily oil producers with subsidized fuel, either maintained stable prices or saw minor decreases. In the U.S., the average price for a gallon of petrol increased from $2.94 to $4.09, resulting in a notable reduction in driving distance for consumers.

Why It Matters

The rise in petrol prices is closely linked to the ongoing military conflict involving key players like the United States and Israel against Iran. This situation has created a ripple effect on global fuel costs, which not only affects transportation but also impacts food prices and overall economic stability. Historically, fluctuations in oil prices have been known to influence various sectors, particularly in lower-income countries where populations spend a larger portion of their income on food and fuel. The current increases in petrol prices highlight the interconnectedness of global markets and the potential for widespread economic repercussions.
