How India’s Gukesh Dommaraju became chess king in a cricket crazy country

Gukesh Dommaraju, an 18-year-old chess prodigy from India, became the youngest world chess champion ever by defeating defending champion Ding Liren of China in the final game of the World Chess Championship. Gukesh, who hails from Chennai, started playing chess at the age of seven and became a grandmaster at 12. He clinched the world title by winning the Candidates Tournament and defeating Ding in a 14-game series. Gukesh’s victory has made India, a country known for cricket, proud.
