How Trump’s MOU with Iran Compares to Obama’s Nuclear Agreement

A memorandum of understanding (MOU) to end the U.S.-Iran conflict has been electronically signed near Paris, following U.S. President Donald Trump’s assertions of an impending agreement. The 14-point MOU requires Iran to refrain from developing nuclear weapons in exchange for sanctions relief, a $300 billion reconstruction plan, and the resumption of maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. Analysts caution that the MOU, which initiates a 60-day negotiation period, lacks the detailed provisions of the previous Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and may not significantly alter the status quo regarding Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
