How does leap day work? Your every-four-years refresher : NPR

On February 29, also known as leap day, a clock displays this rare occurrence that only happens about once every four years. This extra day in the Gregorian calendar is a unique phenomenon that holds different meanings for different people. Some associate leap day with frog jokes and extravagant birthday celebrations, while others may recall the 2010 romantic comedy Leap Year or view it simply as another day of the week.

For Alexander Boxer, a data scientist and author, leap day serves as a reminder of the universe’s ability to defy human attempts at creating orderly and aesthetically pleasing systems to fit its complexities. He views the calendar as a collaborative effort of multiple civilizations striving to understand and measure time accurately.

The concept of leap year stems from the fact that it takes Earth approximately 365.242190 days to complete an orbit around the sun. This fraction of a day necessitates the addition of an extra day every four years to keep the calendar in sync with the solar year. Various civilizations, including the Romans and Egyptians, contributed to the development of leap year traditions and the evolution of the calendar system.

The decision to place the extra day in February was influenced by the Romans’ aversion to the month and their dislike of odd numbers. Over time, the calendar has undergone modifications to balance the need for simplicity with the importance of maintaining seasonal alignments for agricultural and cultural practices.

For individuals born on leap day, known as “leaplings,” the occasion presents unique challenges and advantages. Approximately 5 million people worldwide share this rare birthday, with famous leaplings such as Tony Robbins and Ja Rule. Celebrating birthdays on February 29 can be a source of both amusement and inconvenience, as some systems do not recognize this date as a valid birthdate.

Superstitions and traditions surrounding leap day include romantic customs and celebrations in places like Anthony, Texas, known as the “Leap Year Capital of the World.” This year, the community is hosting a leap year festival to honor the special day and celebrate the town’s unique status. Worldwide, leap day is associated with romance, marriage proposals, and various cultural beliefs connected to this rare occurrence in the calendar.
