AI-driven data center growth is increasing energy costs for Americans

Atlanta resident Carolyn Kayne is facing severe challenges due to rising electric bills, which have nearly doubled over the past two years. Kayne has resorted to extreme measures to cope, including turning off her home’s heat and water and living in a small apartment in her house. The average monthly electric bill for Georgia residents has increased from about $150 to $225, largely attributed to six rate hikes by Georgia Power, the state’s largest energy provider. The growing demand for data centers, particularly driven by artificial intelligence, has further complicated the energy crisis, as these facilities often benefit from discounted power but contribute to higher utility costs for residents. While Georgia Power asserts that residential customers will not bear the costs associated with data centers, many like Kayne are already feeling the financial strain.

Why It Matters

The rising electricity costs in Georgia highlight a broader trend affecting many states, where the proliferation of data centers linked to AI technology is driving up utility bills. Analysis shows that households near data centers have seen energy costs surge by as much as 267% in five years. The situation in Georgia is exacerbated by multiple rate hikes and the recent operationalization of the Vogtle nuclear power plant. As energy demands continue to grow alongside technological advancements, the potential for increased costs and financial hardship for residents raises significant concerns about energy equity and affordability.
