House Republicans race to find a Trump-backed path to avoid government shutdown

House Republican leaders are facing a looming government shutdown as President-elect Donald Trump and his allies rejected a compromise bill to fund the government through March, with hard-line conservatives and billionaire GOP megadonor Elon Musk also opposing the bill. The collapse of the negotiated bill has put House Speaker Mike Johnson’s standing in jeopardy, as Trump unexpectedly demanded that any government funding bill must also raise the debt ceiling. The bill, which included a pay increase for members of Congress, will need Democratic support in the Senate to become law, as time runs out to reach a resolution before Friday night.
