Republicans hold a slim 218-213 majority in the House, which may decrease following a special election in Texas’ 18th Congressional District, where both candidates are Democrats. The election fills the vacancy left by Democratic Rep. Sylvester Turner, who passed away in March 2025. The winner will further challenge GOP leadership, as they face additional special elections in New Jersey, Georgia, and California later this year. With redistricting underway, these elections are critical for both parties amidst a competitive political landscape.
