Syria celebrates one year without al-Assad

Around Damascus’s Umayyad Square, crowds gathered to celebrate the upcoming anniversary of the liberation of the capital and the country. Abu Taj, a 24-year-old who had returned to Syria after a decade in exile, watched the festivities with joy. The collapse of the al-Assad regime a year ago brought relief to many Syrians, despite initial concerns of instability. As celebrations continued in the city, hope for a better future and memories of past hardships were carried by the people, symbolized by the ubiquitous display of Syria’s green, white, and black flag.
