A young driver died, and two passengers were seriously injured when their car crashed into a truck and caught fire near Rotorua. Courageous members of the public and police used around 18 extinguishers to rescue the trapped passengers. Prior to the crash, the driver of a silver Lexus was reported driving dangerously on SH1, exceeding the speed limit by over 80km/h. Police had recognized the vehicle as linked to an aggravated robbery in Tauranga the previous day.
