Leigh Ryswyk becomes first AFL player to come out as gay

Former Brisbane Lions player Leigh Ryswyk has become the first openly gay player in AFL history. Ryswyk is the second former AFL player to publicly identify as part of the LGBTIQA+ community, following Mitch Brown’s announcement of his bisexuality in August 2022. Ryswyk’s brief AFL career included just one game in 2005, where he suffered a quad injury and was subsequently delisted. However, he achieved notable success in the SANFL with North Adelaide, playing 226 games from 2006 to 2018. In a recent interview, Ryswyk shared that he has been openly gay for five years, and while it may be news to some, his close friends have known for a long time. He expressed that the timing of his announcement felt right, stating simply, “Why not?”.

Why It Matters

Leigh Ryswyk’s announcement marks a significant moment in Australian sports, highlighting the ongoing conversation about LGBTQ+ representation in professional athletics. Historically, the AFL has had few players come out while active, making Ryswyk’s revelation noteworthy. The visibility of openly gay athletes can contribute to a more inclusive environment in sports, encouraging acceptance and support for LGBTQ+ individuals. As awareness around these issues grows, such announcements can help combat stigma and promote diversity within the sporting community.
