Fernando Mendoza, the quarterback for No. 1 Indiana, won the Heisman Trophy, making him the first Hoosier to achieve this honor since 1935. He received 2,362 first-place votes, surpassing other finalists including Vanderbilt’s Diego Pavia and Notre Dame’s Jeremiyah Love. Mendoza led Indiana to its inaugural No. 1 ranking, throwing for 2,980 yards and a national-high 33 touchdowns. The redshirt junior, a transfer from California, is the second Indiana player to finish in the Heisman top 10, following Kurtis Rourke’s ninth-place finish last year.
