Torrential downpours in southern Peru have led to deadly mudslides, with over 300 districts declaring states of emergency. The heavy rains have caused significant damage, affecting an estimated 5,500 homes and resulting in the deaths of a father and son. The country’s interim president has been urged to declare a state of emergency in the region, as shelters are opened to accommodate those displaced by the floods. Additionally, a military helicopter crash during rescue efforts claimed the lives of 15 people, including seven children. Scientists attribute the severe weather to the El Niño climate phenomenon, which is expected to bring more heavy rain in the coming weeks.
