Known as J61, a baby female orca was born just before Christmas in Puget Sound but tragically did not survive, according to a Facebook post by the Center for Whale Research. The mother orca, Tahlequah, who gained fame in 2018 for carrying her dead calf for 17 days, has now lost a second calf. The death of J61 is particularly devastating as it marks another loss for the endangered southern resident killer whale population.
