In a 2024 study published in Cell Reports Medicine, researchers examined the link between bowel movement frequency and overall health in otherwise healthy individuals. They found that gut-healthy bacteria thrived best in individuals with one to two bowel movements a day, while constipation led to an increase in harmful toxins in the bloodstream. Diarrhoea, on the other hand, was associated with excess bile production. To improve bowel movement frequency, experts recommend consuming enough fibre, staying hydrated, exercising, and avoiding alcohol.
