Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun has accused Israel of committing an environmental crime by spraying a toxic substance over southern Lebanese towns, calling it a violation of the country’s sovereignty. Aoun condemned the Israeli move and ordered diplomatic and legal measures in response, denouncing it as an attack on Lebanese citizens and their land. UNIFIL suspended operations for nine hours after the attack, collecting samples of the sprayed substance to test for toxicity, while the Lebanese government has been pushing to stop Israeli violations through diplomacy. Despite Hezbollah’s presence and previous clashes, the group has not militarily responded to the repeated Israeli attacks, with Beirut recently completing the removal of Hezbollah’s weapons south of the Litani River as part of a disarmament plan.
