A man named Joshua Smith, 30, was sentenced to three years and eight months in prison after his attempt to smuggle £12,000 worth of drugs into HMP Hull in East Yorkshire failed spectacularly. On July 11, 2022, Smith, shirtless, was recorded making several unsuccessful throws before finally managing to get a package over the prison wall. However, guards quickly spotted the package, which contained a mix of Class A and B drugs along with a mobile phone. Police were notified, and an investigation was launched, which included reviewing CCTV footage that showed Smith’s botched attempts. He ultimately pleaded guilty to two counts of throwing prohibited items into a prison.

Why It Matters

This incident highlights ongoing issues with drug smuggling in prisons, a problem that authorities continue to combat through various means. In recent years, the use of drones for transporting contraband into correctional facilities has increased, complicating enforcement efforts. The consequences of drug smuggling can be severe, leading to safety risks within prisons and potential harm to inmates. This case serves as a reminder of the lengths some individuals will go to facilitate illegal activities, prompting law enforcement to maintain strict oversight and develop new strategies to deter such actions.
