An Auckland businessman, Wei Xu, was granted mercy after attempting to smuggle over 2.6 million black-market cigarettes into New Zealand and illegally export vapes to Australia, citing financial desperation and cultural issues. Authorities executed search warrants at his Coatesville home and Rosedale business in October 2024 after Customs intercepted suspicious shipments. Despite the potential for nearly $4 million in revenue evasion, Judge Paul Murray sentenced Xu to home detention instead of prison, acknowledging his background.
