Holiday traffic on key North Island highways is expected to surge today, with the NZ Transport Agency predicting heavy congestion in Auckland, Waikato, and at Wellington’s northern gateway. Thousands of motorists are traveling for the Christmas break, with the Southern Motorway between Manukau and Bombay identified as the main pressure point. Southbound traffic is forecasted to peak on Christmas Eve from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm, continuing into Christmas Day and Boxing Day. Northbound lanes will also experience delays as travelers head to Auckland for the holiday.
