Wildfire risks increase in Greece while evacuation orders continue in France

Europe’s wildfire crisis has shifted, with Greece now facing the most severe threats as high winds fueled flames in the Porto Germeno seaside resort, prompting hundreds to evacuate by sea. This situation recalls the devastating 2018 wildfire in Mati, which claimed 104 lives. Meanwhile, in southwestern France, firefighters have managed to contain a vast wildfire in Gironde, allowing around 198,000 residents to return home after one of the largest peacetime evacuations in the country’s history. Another fire in southeastern France continues to challenge around 1,500 firefighters. Although major fires in Spain and Portugal are now under control, the situation remains precarious in parts of France, where evacuation orders persist due to potential flare-ups. Overall, the wildfires across western Europe have significantly disrupted lives, evacuating hundreds of thousands and straining emergency services during the peak summer season.

Why It Matters

The wildfires in Europe highlight the increasing frequency and intensity of such disasters linked to climate change, as the continent warms at more than twice the global average since the 1980s. The Copernicus climate service attributes rising temperatures and prolonged drought to drier vegetation, which exacerbates fire conditions. Historically, wildfires have caused significant destruction in Europe, with the 2018 Mati fire serving as a tragic benchmark. The ongoing situation underscores the urgent need for effective wildfire management strategies and policies to cope with the escalating climate crisis.
