Greece rescues 500 asylum seekers off coast of Crete.

Greek coastguard rescued nearly 540 asylum seekers from a fishing boat off Crete, including individuals from Bangladesh, Pakistan, Egypt, and other countries. The asylum claims of these individuals will be processed after health checks in Rethymno. In a separate incident, Frontex rescued 70 more people off Gavdos. Greece, facing increased migration pressures, will receive assistance under the EU’s new migration and asylum pact, with a focus on deporting rejected asylum seekers.
