Greece uses heat-seeking satellites to predict wildfires

Nine young engineers at the Hellenic Space Center in Athens are utilizing Greece’s first thermal imaging satellites to enhance fire response amid escalating wildfires. These satellites can monitor ground conditions and predict fire outbreaks, as well as map vegetation and terrain to assist firefighting efforts. Greece plans to launch additional satellites to further improve environmental monitoring and fire detection capabilities as the country faces around 10,000 fires annually.
