Gramma, the oldest resident of the San Diego Zoo and a beloved Galápagos tortoise, passed away on November 20 at approximately 141 years old. She arrived from the Bronx Zoo in the late 1920s and was known for her gentle personality, living through significant historical events. Recently suffering from age-related bone conditions, she was euthanized, leaving a legacy cherished by many visitors. Galápagos tortoises, now vulnerable or critically endangered, have seen conservation efforts result in over 10,000 juveniles released into the wild since 1965.
