Senate advances funding bill in breakthrough toward ending shutdown
The Senate voted 60 to 40 to advance a House-passed funding measure, signaling a breakthrough in the government shutdown stalemate. Eight Democrats, including Jeanne Shaheen and Dick Durbin, joined Republicans to support the bill, which is aimed at reopening the government this week. House leaders have indicated that votes on government funding will occur soon, and further amendments are expected in the Senate. The legislation must pass both chambers before reaching the president’s desk.
