The health care costs for approximately 22 million Americans are uncertain after the U.S. government reopened without extending an expiring federal tax credit for Affordable Care Act plans. This decision came during the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, with both parties failing to agree on the subsidy extension. While three-quarters of Americans support renewing the subsidies, alternative proposals, including direct financial aid, have also been suggested.
