Android introduces new dots to alleviate car sickness

Google is introducing a new feature for Android devices called Motion Assist, aimed at reducing or eliminating motion sickness for users in moving vehicles. This technology, similar to Apple’s Motion Cues, utilizes the device’s accelerometer and gyroscope to create moving dots on the screen that synchronize with the vehicle’s movements. When the car turns or brakes, these dots shift accordingly, helping to align visual input with physical motion, which can alleviate nausea. The rollout of Motion Assist will occur in phases, starting with select Pixel phones, and users will have options to customize the feature’s opacity, shapes, and colors. The feature is expected to be accessible under Google Settings in the profiles of eligible devices.

Why It Matters

Motion sickness affects a significant portion of the population, particularly in situations where users engage with screens while in motion. Traditional remedies for motion sickness have included medication and behavioral strategies, but technological solutions like Motion Assist offer a promising alternative by leveraging smartphone sensors. With the increasing use of mobile devices for work and entertainment during travel, features that mitigate discomfort can enhance user experience and safety. The introduction of Motion Assist reflects ongoing advancements in smartphone technology aimed at addressing user health and comfort.
