Gianno Caldwell discusses impact of crime policies on families

Four years ago, Christian Caldwell, a teenager, was shot and killed in Chicago, a tragedy that has prompted his brother, Gianno Caldwell, to participate in a march against violent crime. Highlighting the negative impact of soft-on-crime policies in Chicago, Caldwell criticized sanctuary city policies, the elimination of cash bail through the SAFE-T Act, and the perceived prioritization of criminals over public safety. In the first half of 2026, Chicago recorded 210 homicides, marking a nearly 6% increase from the previous year. While national homicide rates decreased in 2025, Caldwell argues that this progress was not due to the policies of Democratic leaders but occurred in spite of them. He pointed to the lack of cooperation from local officials with federal agents in combating crime as a contributing factor to the city’s rising violence.

Why It Matters

Chicago’s experience serves as a case study of the consequences of progressive criminal justice policies, particularly in relation to crime rates and community safety. The SAFE-T Act, which eliminated cash bail, has faced scrutiny as crime statistics indicate an upward trend in violence, including a rise in homicides and shootings. Nationwide, there has been a debate over the effectiveness of sanctuary city policies, with many arguing that they hinder law enforcement efforts. The political and social implications of these policies resonate beyond Chicago, impacting families and communities across the United States.
